Dr. Iakovos Panagopoulos, Assistant Professor at the Department of Audio and Visual Arts, has been elected Secretary of RC57 Visual Sociology (a research committee of the International Sociological Association – ISA). RC57 Visual Sociology represents a diverse field of research that brings together sociologists interested in visual studies and the study of images. As a growing branch within sociology, Visual Sociology attracts an increasing number of researchers who employ visual methods or are interested in the production, use, and dissemination of visual knowledge.

The group’s goal is to stimulate further discussions about the collection of visual data in the field (in archives, photo albums, media, websites, etc.) and the production of visual material by researchers (photography and documentary), emphasizing methods for analyzing such data.

Another objective of the group’s work is the contemporary and historical analysis of the socio-cultural role of the visual field. The main focus here is on how visual material is produced, used, and disseminated, and how it interacts with verbal communication and other forms of expression and aesthetic experiences.

Finally, our aim is to broaden theoretical discussions within the sociology of the visual domain and to explore the applicability of various sociological theories to the analysis of visual data.
